Overview

Helping trainee accountants understand the audit process with a view to improving audit efficiencies is vital in today’s business environment.
Annually, over 500 trainee accountants attend our training modules, and over 50 firms currently utilise our courses nationwide.

Our training covers the entire audit process in a structured manner that best coincides with the responsibilities and job tasks that a trainee is exposed to (and expected to undertake) throughout the various stages of their training contract.

Modules make use of interactive group discussions with integrated questions, real-world case studies and an assessment quiz to ensure all trainees leave with an in-depth understanding of the issues covered. At the end of each module, each trainee will be evaluated, feeding back to the trainee and trainee’s sponsor. All assessment results are also available to the sponsor firm.

The Trainee Ethics Workshop is a new course for 2019 and is driven by SAICA’s requirement that all trainees with a contract end date of after 31 March 2019 attend a 6-8 hour ethics workshop.  While this course is targeted at trainees, it could be extended to apply to any staff member.

The course covers the prescibed syllabus set by SAICA and encompasses the following:

  • What are ethics?
  • Why are ethics important?
  • The consequences of unethical behaviour.
  • Why is being unethical wrong?
  • An overview of moral philosophy (both normative and meta ethics).
  • Why are ethics important in business specifically?
  • How to make ethical choices or decisions.
  • The role of the professional accountant in the field of ethics.
  • Ethical duties of individuals.

The workshop will culminate in an assessment of the content covered.

Fees

The cost of this one-day intervention is R1 250 per participant in 2019, excluding VAT. Lunch is included.

The workshop can also be presented very effectively on an in-house basis where the whole firm can be taken through the content.  In-house rates for 2019 are R19 600 ex VAT for up to 25 participants, with a further fee of R1 100 per additional participant over 25.  This rate does not include the venue or any catering, both of which are for the firms account.

Over a one-day session, we address the SAICA Induction requirements directly. Trainees are taken through their training contracts, their responsibilities in the workplace, the SAICA Training Programme, and the SAICA assessment process (including the assessment instruments).

The Induction course will always cover the brand new Training Regulations which become effective from 1 January that year.

In our opinion, the training contract is the learning opportunity of a lifetime and we try hard to get trainees to recognise this. As such, we place a huge emphasis on getting trainees to not only understand what their training contracts will involve but also that they fully buy into the process.

Fees

The cost of this one-day intervention is R1 250 per participant in 2019 (R1 185 in 2018), excluding VAT. Lunch is included.

Advanced Audit Procedures (AAP) 4

This course takes the form of an interactive role-play with the presenter acting as the (sometimes difficult) client! This simulated audit of a medium-sized clothing manufacturer is conducted from the planning stage through to the final audited trial balance, not only honing the professional skills required on audits, but also covering:

  • The completion of various aspects of the planning documentation (including the negotiation of an audit budget).
  • Completing and concluding on the audit work on receivables, inventory and payables.
  • Evaluating final audit differences.

This is an invaluable opportunity for trainees to establish exactly how good they are at planning and performing audits. Trainees leave the course with a report back on their developmental needs.

AAP 4 has proven to be a real confidence boost prior to trainees assuming full responsibility for running audits from start to finish.

Fees

The Simulated Audit is a 3-day course. The cost is R3 750 per participant in 2019 (R3 555 in 2018). These costs are exclusive of VAT but inclusive of teas and lunches as well as any files and course material to be distributed to the trainees.

Advanced Audit Procedures (AAP) 5 covers:

  • Equipping and assessing trainees on the design and performance of tests of control, with the aim to get all participants to ‘level 4 advanced’ for all associated tasks in this SAICA competency.
  • Preparing the trainee for assessment by working through the theory behind testing controls and showing how this is practically achieved.
  • A formal assessment on the final day.

This course is conducted by NSOA SAICA-Registered Assessors, and results in a formal assessment of competence in TSR format. Trainees who do not meet the required levels of competence during this workshop do receive a re-assessment opportunity (after receiving feedback on their developmental needs).

This assessment will then provide the firm’s Assessors with sufficient evidence of their trainees’ competence in these tasks to sign them off for the Auditing & Assurance Elective (or, by default, for the Residual).

Fees

This is a 2-and-a-half day course. The cost is R3 875 per participant in 2019 (R 3 662.50 in 2018). These costs are exclusive of VAT but inclusive of teas and lunches as well as any files and course material to be distributed to the trainees. The cost also includes the assessment of the trainee’s ‘portfolio of evidence’ as well as any re-assessments if required.

Please note that any re-assessments that may be required are conducted outside of normal business hours.
